HC Deb 11 February 1954 vol 523 c162W
107. Mr. Hayman

asked the Minister of Health how many children of school age are classified as ineducable; and how many of these were so classified without having entered a school.

Miss Hornsby-Smith

Local health authorities' returns for England and Wales show that at 31st December, 1952, 23,654 mentally defectivechildren under 16 were known to them. Of these, over 7,000 were in hospitals. No information is available as to how many of these children had not been to school, but of 6,230 children reported to local health authorities in 1952, 4,600 were ascertained to be defectives following reports from local education authorities while the children were liable to attend school or on leaving school. Perhaps the hon. Member would write to my right hon. Friend if he would like some further explanation of these figures.
