asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many boroughs and urban districts of England and Wales with populations exceeding 20,000 have fire cover by full-time firemen; how many by full-time firemen for part of the day; and how many wholly by retained men.

Out of 409 boroughs and urban districts which had a population exceeding 20,000 according to the Estimate Census of 1952, cover is provided by whole-time men continuously in 350 cases and for part of the day in 25 cases. In 34 cases cover is provided entirely by retained men.
