HC Deb 21 December 1954 vol 535 cc254-5W
68. Mr. Swingler

asked the Secretary of State for War to state the present weekly rates of marriage allowance for private soldiers, whether Regulars or National Service men and the dates on which these rates were fixed; and what calculations he has made as to the relation of these allowances to the present cost of living.

Mr. F. Maclean

42s. a week for a Regular and 35s. a week for a National Service man. The rates were fixed in November, 1948, and July, 1946, respectively. Marriage allowance is only part of the emoluments of the married soldier, and in itself bears no direct relationship to the cost of living.
