HC Deb 20 December 1954 vol 535 cc216-7W
77. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power if he will make a statement giving the latest details concerning the coal situation, and the prospects for the early part of 1955.

Mr. Joynson-Hicks

Output during the last two months has been below expectations, but distributed stocks on 4th December were 17.1 million tons. The National Coal Board and the miners' leaders are doing all they can to secure the earliest possible recovery of output but, as my right hon. Friend has already informed the House, the Government have arranged for a substantial quantity of imports to maintain supplies during the winter.
