HC Deb 20 December 1954 vol 535 c246W
Sir F. Markham

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether, in view of the difficulties of recovering the cost of damage done to roads and bridges by the transport of heavy minerals from the individuals or companies responsible, he will consider some modification of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, which will make it obligatory for such heavy loads to be transported by rail where practicable.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for Nottingham, East (Mr. J. Harrison) on 15th December.

Sir F. Markham

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether, in view of the extensive damage done to roads and bridges in Northamptonshire and adjacent counties by the transport of heavy ironstone loads by road, he will take steps to encourage the transport of such heavy loads by rail in future.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I have received no reports of extensive damage, but if my hon. and gallant Friend will let me have particulars as to where he thinks it has taken place, I will be glad to look into the matter further.
