HC Deb 20 December 1954 vol 535 cc230-1W
102. Mr. G. Jeger

asked the Minister of Health what would be the cost of abolishing the charge of 1s. per prescription.

Miss Hornsby-Smith

The estimated cost to the Exchequer is about £6½ million a year so far as England and Wales are concerned, after taking into account the refunds made in certain cases by the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance and by the National Assistance Board, but without making any allowance for any increase in the number of prescriptions which might result.
