HC Deb 13 December 1954 vol 535 c104W
Mr. Black

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation the estimated tonnages of goods moved annually by road and rail, respectively, in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The tonnage figures, together with figures of ton mileages which are included in view of the different average lengths of haul, are as follows:

Road Rail
Tons carried (Millions) About 900 300
Ton-mileage (Thousands of millions). About 19 22

The figures for road traffic are estimates based on a sample inquiry made in September, 1952; the figures for rail are those of tonnage originating, including free hauled traffic. All figures relate to 1952 and exclude traffic in Northern Ireland, for which figures of road traffic are not. available.
