HC Deb 09 December 1954 vol 535 c57W
7. Sir R. Perkins

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why past service in the Stroud Voluntary Fire Brigade does not count towards the Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct Medal; and whether, in view of the general disquiet, he will amend the Royal Warrant to enable past services to be included.

Major Lloyd-George

The Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct Medal has been instituted for paid and volunteer members of public fire services, and service in brigades which, like the Stroud Voluntary Fire Brigade, were not maintained by local authorities or Government Departments is not service within the meaning of the regulations. As the medal is intended as a reward for service in public brigades, I am not prepared to recommend the inclusion of service in other organisations.
