HC Deb 02 December 1954 vol 535 cc7-8W
Miss Herbison

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans he has made, in conjunction with other Departments, to ensure that certain areas of Lanarkshire, now dependent on a coal industry which is rapidly decreasing, will have security of employment in the future.

Mr. J. Stuart

I maintain close consultation with the other Ministers concerned about the problems arising from the declining coal industry in certain parts of Lanarkshire, and the Board of Trade keep them closely in mind in their efforts to attract new industry to north Lanarkshire. The identification and earmarking of sites suitable for industrial use is being given special attention by the county council in consultation with the Department of Health for Scotland.
