§ 9. Mr. Sorensenasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is satisfied with the financial aid given, and the measures taken, to assist the victims of the Cyprus earthquake; and what answer he has given to the representations of the Paphos Earthquake Victims Committee.
§ Mr. HopkinsonYes. Householders have been generously assisted to repair or replace houses damaged or destroyed. Many villagers have received pre-fabricated framework houses free of charge and assistance in cash and kind towards completing them. The cost to the Cyprus Government of relief and reconstruction is estimated at £1½ million, towards which, as my right hon. Friend informed the House on 24th February, Her Majesty's Government will contribute £ ½ million.
The representations from the Committee mentioned will be answered when My right hon. Friend has received a report on the subject from the Governor of Cyprus.
