HC Deb 28 April 1954 vol 526 c155W
9. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is satisfied with the financial aid given, and the measures taken, to assist the victims of the Cyprus earthquake; and what answer he has given to the representations of the Paphos Earthquake Victims Committee.

Mr. Hopkinson

Yes. Householders have been generously assisted to repair or replace houses damaged or destroyed. Many villagers have received pre-fabricated framework houses free of charge and assistance in cash and kind towards completing them. The cost to the Cyprus Government of relief and reconstruction is estimated at £1½ million, towards which, as my right hon. Friend informed the House on 24th February, Her Majesty's Government will contribute £ ½ million.

The representations from the Committee mentioned will be answered when My right hon. Friend has received a report on the subject from the Governor of Cyprus.
