HC Deb 27 April 1954 vol 526 cc153-4W
Mr. Llewellyn

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation whether he will make a statement concerning his discussions with a deputation from the trade union side of the National Joint Council for Civil Air Transport and, in particular, concerning undertakings given by buyers of Hermes aircraft to continue maintenance at the British Overseas Airways Corporation establishment at Treforest.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

On 10th April I met representatives of the trade union side of the National Joint Council for Civil Air Transport, at their request, to discuss the sale of surplus Hermes aircraft by the British Overseas Airways Corporation to independent air transport operators. After a full exchange of views, I made it clear that, while I fully endorsed the Corporation's decision that they could not make it a binding condition of sale that the engines of these aircraft should be overhauled at their Treforest establishment, I would nevertheless welcome any success which the Corporation might have in concluding voluntary agreements with the prospective purchasers for the maintenance of these engines to be continued at Treforest.
