HC Deb 12 April 1954 vol 526 cc88-9W
37. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance what instructions have been issued to National Assistance offices precluding the assistance of those who have been unemployed for one week only; what advice has been given with regard to the applicant obtaining an advance of his next week's wages; and how long it is intended that this system should operate.

Mr. Turton

The Board's views on these points are as set out in its Annual Report for 1949. The Board considers it only reasonable to expect that, in general, a person who has had a spell of work at good wages should be able to maintain himself without assistance during waiting days for benefit. As regards men who have returned to work, it considers it should not be necessary to expend public money in assisting men who have wages due to them.
