asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1) which States have ratified the Geneva Convention, 1949;

(2) whether Her Majesty's Government have yet signed and ratified the Geneva Convention, 1949.

Thirty-three States have either ratified or acceded to the 1949 Geneva Conventions for the Protection of War Victims. Her Majesty's Government have signed these Conventions but will not be in a position to ratify them until the legislation has been passed which is necessary to give effect to certain of their provisions.

The following States have up to date either ratified or acceded to the 1949 Geneva Conventions for the Protection of War Victims: Austria, Belgium, Chile, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Egypt, El Salvador, France, Guatemala, the Holy See, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mexico, Monaco, Nicaragua, Norway, Pakistan, Philippine Republic, San Marino, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Turkey, Vietnam, and Yugoslavia.
