HC Deb 29 October 1953 vol 518 c395W
Mr. G. P. Stevens

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he will make a statement on the policy of Her Majesty's Government with regard to the provision of hostels for apprentices in the Royal dockyards.

Mr. J. P. L. Thomas

The Admiralty consider that the best form of accommodation for young apprentices living away from home is in good private homes. The apprentices are helped in finding suitable lodgings, and maintenance allowance is payable. If experience showed that suitable lodgings were not available at any place, the provision of a hostel would be considered.
