HC Deb 27 October 1953 vol 518 c335W
33. Brigadier Clarke

asked the Secretary of State for War why widows of officers serving on a short service commission do not receive the full gratuity earned by their husbands.

Mr. Head

The short service gratuity, like all terminal awards in the Army, is payable to the officer himself, when he completes the service he has undertaken, to help his resettlement in civil life. Separate provision exists for widows.
