58. Colonel Gomme-Duncan

asked the Secretary of State for War why the estimated number of staff officers, second grade, in the Department of the Permanent Under-Secretary of State is to be increased from 29 in 1952–53 to 34 in 1953–54.

Mr. Head

One of the additional staff officers second grade was in substitution for a staff officer first grade. The other four were required for the Inspectorate of Establishments to provide a more frequent and effective check on Army establishments.

59. Colonel Gomme-Duncan

asked the Secretary of State for War the duties of the Progress Officer (Printing) (Temporary) in the Department of the Permanent Under-Secretary of State.

Mr. Head

This official is responsible for ensuring that the military publications and Army forms and books on order from the printers are delivered on time.

60. Colonel Gomme-Duncan

asked the Secretary of State for War why the estimated number of chief executive officers and senior executive officers on the civil staff of the Department of the Permanent Under-Secretary of State is to be increased from 16 to 18 and from 63 to 65, respectively, in 1953–54.

Mr. Head

Two additional chief executive officers were required to fill two principals' posts in which grade there was a decrease of three. The two additional senior executive officers were required temporarily for work connected with the Coronation arrangements and to deal with certain new financial problems in Germany, and they will not continue.
