HC Deb 20 October 1953 vol 518 c243W
36. Mr. A. J. Irvine

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will make a statement upon the strike at the Merseyside docks which commenced on 1st October after the dismissal of one docker, Ernest Sullivan.

Mr. Watkinson

Following the disallowance of an appeal by a Birkenhead docker against his dismissal, there was an unofficial stoppage of work on Thursday, 1st October, which affected the whole of the Birkenhead docks. On Monday, 5th October, about 4,000 dockers employed at the Liverpool Docks joined the stoppage in sympathy, but over 7,000 remained at work. There was an unconditional resumption of work at both Liverpool and Birkenhead on Thursday, 8th October.
