asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the annual total of salaries and wages paid to the 662,975 civil servants of Government Departments in posts on 1st July, 1953, as detailed in H.C. 8926; and if he will give similar figures at 1st January, 1952.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The cost of salaries and wages of the non-industrial Civil Service was £338.7 million for the 12 months ending 30th September, 1952. The average number of staff employed during this period was 682,508. The figures for the year ending 30th September, 1953, will not be available for some time.
