§ Mr. PeakeAt 29th September, 1953, the National Assistance Boardwere paying about 912,000 regular weekly grants to retirement pensioners. In some cases, these grants covered the needs of a household containing more than one pensioner. Grants were being paid to just over one pensioner household in every four.
