HC Deb 26 November 1953 vol 521 c76W
92. Mr. Hayman

asked the Minister of Health whether the thoracic surgery unit at Tehidy Hospital, Cornwall, is now in full use; and how many major operations have taken place there.

Mr. Iain Macleod

The unit started work last week. Two major operations have taken place, and it is expected that there will be six a week from now on

93. Mr. Hayman

asked the Minister of Health the average weekly number of patients in Tehidy Hospital, Cornwall, awaiting major thoracic surgical operations during the past 15 months; and how many persons outside the hospital have been on the waiting-list for such operations during the same period.

Mr. Iain Macleod

Precise information is not available in the form requested, but it is estimated that throughout this period there have been on average 50 patients in Cornwall suitable for thoracic surgery, including in-patients in Tehidy Hospital. Not all of these at any one time would be ready for immediate operation for which a long period of preparation is often needed.
