HC Deb 26 November 1953 vol 521 c93W
136. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Minister of Food his plans to guard against abuse of the future sales of fat cattle at auction marts.

137. Brigadier Medlicott

asked the Minister of Food if he is aware of the concern felt by farmers as to the likely operations of buying rings in the proposed auctions of fat stock; and if he will consider plans to prevent, or limit, the operation of these rings.

Dr. Hill

The recent White Paper on the Marketing of Agricultural Produce (Cmd. 8989) stated that the Government recognised that the pre-war auction system was unsatisfactory in certain respects, and that they were inviting representatives of the farmers and other interested parties to co-operate with appropriate Departments in making immediate improvements. Discussions have now begun.
