HC Deb 25 November 1953 vol 521 c44W
79. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when he proposes to allow Somali people the right to choose their own tribal chiefs without intervention by his officers.

Mr. Lyttelton

In the present stage of development in the Protectorate, I do not propose to alter the existing system whereby the Governor approves and appoints as a local authority a chief who has already been chosen by the tribe concerned.
