HC Deb 25 November 1953 vol 521 c45W
82. Sir H. Williams

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will obtain a report from the Governor of Cyprus and inform the House on the action of the Customs authorities in Limasol in pouring into the sea 7,044 bottles of whisky because they had been lying unclaimed at the Customs office for 12 months.

Mr. Lyttelton

I understand that the importer, after inspecting this whisky, refused to pay the import duty. As he was also unwilling to incur the expense of re-exporting the consignment he authorised the Customs to destroy it in his presence. The whisky was the remainder of a consignment of 30,000 bottles of Australian origin sent to Malta in 1944.
