70. Mr. G. H. R. Rogers

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what changes he has made in the personnel of rent tribunals in London in 1953; and what is the policy which governs the choice of chairmen.

Mr. Marples

My right hon. Friend's policy in regard to the choice of chairmen of rent tribunals is to make the best possible appointments.

Following is the answer to the first part of the Question:

RENT TRIBUNALS

Changes in personnel: London Area

Lady Pakenham—Appointed Member of the Hampstead Tribunal in place of Mr. S. D. V. Yorke, who died, 6th May, 1953.

Mr. Beaufort-Palmer—Chairman of the Hammersmith Tribunal. Appointment terminated, 30th September, 1953.

Miss V. Stephenson—Chairman of the Ealing Tribunal. Appointed Chairman of the Hammersmith Tribunal, 1st October, 1953.

Mr. Webb Johnson—Appointed Chairman of the Ealing Tribunal, 1st October, 1953.

Mr. F. J. Taylor—Member of the Ealing Tribunal. Appointed Member and Reserve Chairman of that tribunal in place of Mr. J. A. Jones, who resigned, 16th November, 1953.

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how many cases where dealt with by the Hammersmith Rent Tribunal from June, 1946, to 1st September, 1953;and how many cases taken to the High Court during that period were lost by the tribunal.

Mr. Marples

From 26th June, 1946, to 30th September, 1953, the Hammersmith Rent Tribunal decided 5,176 cases. During that period the tribunal has lost eight cases in the High Court, all of them in the last three years.
