HC Deb 19 November 1953 vol 520 c189W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if his attention has been called to the prevalence of lead stealing from churches and vacant houses within the Metropolitan Police area; and if he will take action to counter this and control the sale of stolen metals, particulars of which have been sent to him.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The answer to the first part of the Question is "Yes." The answer to the second part is that the law already contains certain provisions for controlling the sale and purchase of old metals and many offenders are brought to justice, but I am considering whether any amendment of the law would be practicable or desirable.
