§ 85. Mr. Awberyasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps have been taken to set up in the Federation of Malaya and the States of the Federation, joint industrial councils or similar 170W committees for the tin-mining industry, particularly among those known as European mines and held by English, American and Australian owners where the workers are anxious to set up such wage negotiating machinery.
§ Mr. LytteltonInformal discussions have taken place between the two sides on wages and other conditions of service. At present the union concerned represents only about one-tenth of the number of workers employed in the tin industry, and is confined largely to Perak. The time, therefore, is not yet felt to be ripe for formal machinery of the sort mentioned.
