HC Deb 18 November 1953 vol 520 c174W
101. Mr. N. Nicolson

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General whether he will amend the regulations regarding repairs to telephones at night and over weekends, to make this service available to businesses like car-hire firms, which are wholly dependent on a 24-hour maintenance of their telephone.

Mr. Gammans

Twenty-four hour maintenance is provided for telephone subscribers who are responsible for dealing with emergencies in public utility and other essential services, or whose duties involve the safety of human life. The service is very expensive in manpower and I regret that it is not possible to extend it to the type of case mentioned by my hon. Friend.
