HC Deb 17 November 1953 vol 520 cc135-6W
58. Mr. G. Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for War if he is aware that Private Clifford Davies, Royal Pioneer Corps, Wrexham, after undergoing a serious operation at Eryri Hospital, Caernarvon, on 19th October, was taken back to his unit on 2nd November and immediately placed on duty; and if he will ensure that this soldier is immediately discharged.

Mr. J. R. H. Hutchison

This soldier's operation, while important, was not a serious one. He made an uninterrupted recovery from it and was fit to rejoin his unit on 2nd November. His duties there, until he went to the convalescent depot on 11th November, were of the lightest. He has made further progress and is expected to be fit for full duties in two or three weeks. There are no medical grounds for his discharge from the Army.

59. Mr. Gower

asked the Secretary of State for War if he will take steps to revoke the posting for service in the Far East of 22902941 Sapper G. A. Phillips, of 415 Party, A Squadron, Royal Engineers, Gibraltar Barracks, Aldershot, the son of Mrs. G. A. Phillips, of 5 Montgomery Road, Barry, Glamorgan, in view of the fact that Sapper Phillips has sufferred from ear trouble since childhood and that Mrs. G. A. Phillips must shortly enter hospital for three operations, and for other reasons communicated to him by the hon. Member for Barry.

Mr. J. R. H. Hutchison

Yes. Although it is not yet certain that his mother must undergo an operation, it has been decided that this soldier should be kept in this country for the present.

62. Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for War if he will hold an inquiry into the case of the court martial of T/22426162 Driver King; and if he will supply the hon. Member for Eccles with a verbatim report of the court-martial proceedings.

Mr. J. R. H. Hutchison

No. As to the second part of the Question, entitlement to a copy of the proceedings is restricted by Section 124 of the Army Act, but under the present circumstances the hon. Member may examine the proceedings in the War Office, if he will get in touch with me.
