HC Deb 16 November 1953 vol 520 c113W
54. Mr. Llewellyn

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he is aware that last year there were 199 cases of suspected explosives found in coal, involving 47 explosives in fireplaces, and injuring 30 people; how these statistics compare with those of pre-war years; what action he has taken in the matter; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

Pre-war figures are not available. I very much regret these cases, and the National Coal Board assure me they are doing everything possible to eliminate this trouble. Last year I introduced new regulations on the use of explosives in mines, containing requirements which I am advised go as far as practicable by this means to reduce the risk.
