HC Deb 12 November 1953 vol 520 cc65-6W
80 and 81. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Agriculture (1) who appoints the nominated members of the Agricultural Land Tribunal; and by whom, and in what manner, members of the panel are selected to sit on each particular case;

(2) how far he delegates his powers of appointment of members of the Agricultural Land Tribunal; under what authority he deputes his powers; and to whom he deputes them.

Sir T. Dugdale

The Chairman of an Agricultural Land Tribunal is appointed by the Lord Chancellor and must be a barrister or solicitor of not less than seven years' standing. The other two members are appointed by me, for each reference to the Tribunal, from panels of persons nominated, in the case of one member, by the National Farmers' Union and in the case of the other, by the Country Landowners' Association. The actual appointments are made on my instructions by my Provincial Land Commissioner, who consults the Chairman of the Tribunal before making a selection from the names.

I am contemplating a modification of these arrangements which would take the appointment of these two members out of my hands.
