HC Deb 13 May 1953 vol 515 c82W
Mr. Baker

asked the Minister of Food what steps are being taken to remedy the shortage of slaughterhouse facilities in Norfolk; and whether he will authorise the reopening of a number of smaller slaughterhouses to ease the situation until more permanent facilities have been provided.

Major Lloyd George

The shortage arises only in the spring, when the winterfed cattle are marketed. Surplus animals are then sent elsewhere for slaughter, and I not think it is necessary for my Department to use some of the smaller slaughterhouses in Norfolk. The ques-of slaughtering facilities in production and consuming areas is being considered by the Inter-Departmental Committee on slaughterhouse siting.
