§ Mr. Bakerasked the Minister of Food what steps are being taken to remedy the shortage of slaughterhouse facilities in Norfolk; and whether he will authorise the reopening of a number of smaller slaughterhouses to ease the situation until more permanent facilities have been provided.
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeThe shortage arises only in the spring, when the winterfed cattle are marketed. Surplus animals are then sent elsewhere for slaughter, and I not think it is necessary for my Department to use some of the smaller slaughterhouses in Norfolk. The ques-of slaughtering facilities in production and consuming areas is being considered by the Inter-Departmental Committee on slaughterhouse siting.
