HC Deb 11 May 1953 vol 515 cc64-5W
Mr. Fenner Brockway

asked the Undersecretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what action he proposes to take in view of the renewed decision of the kgotla of the Bamangwato tribe in Bechuanaland not to appoint another chief whilst Seretse Khama is alive.

Mr. Hopkinson

I have been asked to reply. No decision of the character suggested in the Question was taken by the kgotla. The position is that at the kgotla meetings held in November last and again last week the tribe failed to agree about designation of a new chief. My noble Friend the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations is considering the situation arising from these inconclusive meetings.
