HC Deb 05 May 1953 vol 515 cc19-20W
Mr. Bullard

asked the Minister of Agriculture what special instructions he is issuing to internal drainage boards whose areas were affected by the floods about the laying of their rate on land which cannot be cropped this year.

Sir T. Dugdale

Internal drainage boards in the areas affected by the floods are being informed that relief from the payment of drainage rates for the current year may be given to ratepayers whose property was damaged in the recent floods on the following basis:

Agricultural land. Where less than 25 per cent. of the land was damaged by salt water—no relief;

Where from 25 to 50 per cent. was damaged—relief from one-third of the rates for the year;

Where 50 to 75 per cent. was damaged—relief from two-thirds of the rates;

Where over 75 per cent. was damaged—full relief.

Houses and other non-agricultural hereditaments. If the premises cannot be occupied or used for six months or more-full relief from drainage rates for a year will be given.

The revenue so lost will be made good by payments from the Exchequer to the internal drainage boards.
