61. Mr. Leeasked the Minister of Supply what plans the Government are making to replace armament work for the engineering industry by other types of production.
§ Mr. SandysDefence expenditure in the engineering industry is higher this year than it was last and present plans do not involve any appreciable change in the level of defence production next year. Where adjustments in the programme from time to time create redundancy in a particular branch or locality, the Government Departments concerned will do everything possible to assist industry to re-absorb those affected in alternative employment.
