HC Deb 01 May 1953 vol 514 cc124-5W
Commander Maitland

asked the Minister of Agriculture what arrangements he is making regarding flood warning arrangements on the East Coast for the summer months.

Sir T. Dugdale

Except in most abnormal conditions, serious flooding is unlikely in the summer months. I have however arranged for river boards to receive advice direct from the meteorological office about local wind conditions. That office is also advising the Hydro-graphic Department of the Admiralty of meteorological conditions which may give rise to tidal surges. Where such conditions exist the Hydrographic Department will obtain from selected harbourmasters on the East Coast particulars of the progress of the tides and will advise my Department of the anticipated progress and height of tidal surges. My Department will transmit this information to river boards, and they, with the information supplied, combined with their own local knowledge, will advise the police on the local situation. The police will decide whether and when a local public warning should be given.

The Waverley Committee is considering what permanent flood warning arrangements should be instituted.
