HC Deb 26 March 1953 vol 513 c98W
68. Mr. Shurmer

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if he is aware of the hardship caused to many families who are left in poor circumstances when a holder of post-war credits dies before reaching the age of 65 and his widow is also below that age; and whether, when preparing his Budget, he will consider the introduction of a scheme to repay postwar credits to widows in such circumstances.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The question of paying post-war credits to either general or particular classes of taxpayers is one of the matters which my right hon. Friend will consider when framing his Budget proposals. In view of the terms of his Question, I ought to draw the hon. Member's attention to the fact that under the present law, if a woman is entitled to her late husband's credits, she can claim payment on reaching the age of 60.
