HC Deb 26 March 1953 vol 513 c107W
91. Captain Stanley

asked the Minis of Health why, and under what authority, Mrs. Connor of Fleetwood, details of whose case have been sent to him, was detained in Kirkham Hospital.

Miss Hornsby-Smith

Mrs. Connor was detained under the authority of an order made by a Justice of the Peace under the provisions of Section 47 of the National Assistance Act, 1948, as amended by the National Assistance (Amendment) Act, 1951. The purpose of the order was to secure the necessary care and attention for Mrs. Connor as being an aged person living in insanitary conditions without proper care and attention. My right hon. Friend is satisfied that the action taken was in Mrs. Connor's own interest, and that a most distressing duty was properly carried out.
