HC Deb 19 March 1953 vol 513 c30W
85. Mr. Hurd

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he will make a further statement on the vacancies for students at farm institutes and the arrangements made for the postponement of military service in suitable cases.

Sir T. Dugdale

To help to overcome the difficulties experienced by farm institutes in the current session, my right hon. and learned Friend the Minister of Labour and National Service and I have made new arrangements covering the admission of men to the institutes for the session beginning next Michaelmas. Most men who become 18 this year can have their call-up deferred to enable them to take a farm institute course and, if they have been granted agricultural deferment as agricultural workers they may go to an institute without prejudicing their continued deferment after the course, provided that they return to the same job, or, where this is not practicable, to a similar one.
