HC Deb 19 March 1953 vol 513 cc32-4W
93. Sir H. Williams

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will review the police arrangements for Coronation day in order that the public who wish to greet Her Majesty should not be subjected to the inconvenience that will arise from the present proposals.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis has recently reviewed the detailed arrangements with a view to seeing that inconvenience to the public is kept to a minimum, but in the light of previous experience does not feel that any modification either in the arrangements or the advice already issued to the public would be justifiable.

94. Mr. Mitchison

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in recognition of the valuable public service rendered by the railway police both in London and elsewhere, he will make arrangements with the British Transport Commission for their representation among police detachments lining the route on the occasion of Her Majesty's Coronation.

95. Mr. Steele

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrangements he proposes to make with

the British Transport Commission for the inclusion of the railway police among police and other forces along the route on Coronation day.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The powers of police from other areas lining the route on this occasion derive from Section 25 of the Police Act, 1890, which makes provision regarding assistance by one police force to another. This Section does not apply to members of the railway police and, in the circumstances, it was decided with regret that contingents of railway police could not be employed to line the route.
