HC Deb 19 March 1953 vol 513 cc35-7W
Mr. Lewis

asked the Minister of Labour to publish in HANSARD a table showing the monthly total of unemployed for each month, from October, 1950, until the latest convenient date, for Barnsley, Hayes and Harlington.

Sir W. Monckton

There is no employment exchange at Harlington, which is in the area of the Hayes Employment Exchange. The following table shows the numbers of unemployed persons on the registers of the Barnsley and Hayes employment exchanges and youth employment offices from October, 1950, to February, 1953:

Sir W. Monckton

A strike of some 400 maintenance craftsmen at the Warrenby Steel Works, Redcar, of Dorman Long and Co. Ltd. began on 8th March. The stoppage is unofficial and arises out of dissatisfaction with an agreement recently made with the unions concerned regarding a revised tonnage bonus. No approach has been made to my Department. I trust that the men concerned will accept the advice of their unions that the agreement made on their behalf must be honoured and that they should resume work on that basis.
