HC Deb 17 March 1953 vol 512 cc183-4W
Mr. N. Macpherson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what procedure exists for the writing off of payments made in error by a police committee to a widow under the Police Pensions Regulations, with a view to avoiding the hardship imposed by recovering the overpayment in instalments from the widow.

Mr. J. Stuart

Police authorities are not empowered to write off a payment made in error if it is legally recoverable.

Where, however, a recovery has to be made, I have no doubt that the authority concerned will proceed in the way least likely to cause hardship.
