HC Deb 11 March 1953 vol 512 c123W
74. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many tons of peanuts, lying at Kano, have been damaged by insect pests and are unfit for export; what would have been the prices per ton of these nuts; who will pay the native growers in Nigeria for these; and how far in the final event this loss will devolve upon the United Kingdom taxpayer.

Mr. Lyttelton

The answers to these four questions are:(a) About 570 tons; (b) This would have depended on the contract price at the time of shipment; (c) The growers have already been paid by the Nigeria Groundnut Marketing Board; (d) The whole loss is borne by the Board.
