HC Deb 10 March 1953 vol 512 c95W
Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer on what grounds he has decided not to postpone the Whit Monday Bank Holiday this year by one week until Monday, 1st June, which would provide a holiday week-end before Coronation Day.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Although there are arguments in favour of this proposal, the combination of Coronation Day and a traditional Bank Holiday in the same week would impose an undue strain on transport facilities. In any event to make such a change now would disrupt holiday arrangements already made.
