HC Deb 10 March 1953 vol 512 c109W
116. Mr. Gough

asked the Secretary of State for War to make a statement about the position of the 88 militia battalions placed in a state of suspended animation in 1923.

Mr. J. R. H. Hutchison

These battalions were placed in a state of suspended animation in 1923 and not disbanded because of the possibility of there being a role for them at a future date. The experience of the last war has shown that the Militia is no longer necessary and my right hon. Friend has decided that it should now be formally disbanded.
