HC Deb 10 March 1953 vol 512 c111W
Lieut.-Commander Baldock

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will take steps to release able-bodied police constables from traffic duties in the Metropolitan area for patrolling beats for the prevention of crime, in view of the success of the traffic warders' scheme.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The employment of school crossing patrols in the Metropolitan Police District has already released regular police from the supervision of a considerable number of crossings used by schoolchildren. While I hope that it will be possible to extend these arrangements, they serve a strictly limited purpose, and do not enable police officers to be relieved of other traffic work which is an integral part of police duty.
