HC Deb 04 March 1953 vol 512 c34W
58. Mr. Dodds

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty how many naval personnel were engaged in work resulting from the floods; and what action is being taken to show in a practical way the nation's appreciation for the work they performed under most trying conditions.

Mr. J. P. L. Thomas

At the period of peak demand about 4,000 Royal naval and Royal Marine personnel, including crews of ships, landing craft and helicopters, were engaged in flood relief work in this country and in Holland.

The question of special recognition has already been dealt with by my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Defence in his reply to the hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent, South (Mr. Ellis Smith) last Thursday. In addition to the tribute paid by the House, the Board of Admiralty has issued a special message of appreciation in recognition of the splendid efforts of all naval and Royal Marine personnel in helping flood relief work both in this country and in Holland.
