HC Deb 03 March 1953 vol 512 cc29-30W
Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Food to what extent the capacity of the British Sugar Corporation to refine sugar has been or is intended to be increased.

Major Lloyd George

The British Sugar Corporation plan to equip two more of their raw sugar factories with plant to enable them to produce refined sugar. This will increase their total refining capacity by about 16 per cent.

Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Food to what extent the capacity of the British Sugar Corporation is used for the refinery of sugar throughout the year.

Major Lloyd George

The British Sugar Corporation uses to the full its capacity to produce refined sugar during the sugar beet processing season. During the off-season the Corporation continues to use all the refining capacity available having regard to the work now being carried out under the six year reconstruction programme.
