HC Deb 25 June 1953 vol 516 cc164-5W
73. Mr. P. Wells

asked the Minister of Education what action she is taking to remedy the growing shortage of graduate teachers.

Miss Horsbrugh

There is no shortage of graduate teachers holding arts degrees. The number of graduates holding mathematics and science degrees employed in the maintained grammar schools has increased slightly during the last three years, but some schools are having difficulty in filling their vacancies. The National Advisory Council for the Training and Supply of Teachers has been asked to investigate the extent of the shortage and to recommend what steps should be taken to increase the supply of these graduates.
