HC Deb 25 June 1953 vol 516 c153W
1. Mr. F. Maclean

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been drawn to the unsatisfied demand for crash helmets by motor cyclists; and whether he will now cause crash helmets to be reclassified as motor cycle accessories in order to facilitate their import from France.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

Yes. I have seen the Press report on this subject. I have no evidence of any shortage and I could not agree to allow imports without restriction in present circumstances. But in view of the increasing demand for crash helmets and the importance which Her Majesty's Government attach to road safety, I shall certainly give sympathetic consideration to applications for additional imports from Western Europe.
