HC Deb 31 July 1953 vol 518 cc224-5W
Mr. Alport

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a further statement about the financial assistance to the Kenya Government to be provided by Her Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom to meet the cost of the present emergency.

Mr. Lyttelton

In accordance with my statement to the House on 29th April, I have assured the Governor that Her Majesty's Government will stand behind Kenya and will give financial assistance when the need is established, thus enabling Kenya to press ahead with social and economic development as fast as circumstances permit and at the same time to maintain adequate financial reserves.

The Governor and myself are satisfied that need, even in this broad sense, has not yet arisen, but if the emergency is prolonged the situation will require careful watching and at the Governor's request I shall be ready to review it with him in the autumn in order that, if necessary, arrangements may be made in good time.
